Trust Those Ingredients?

Recently, I’ve seen several posts on Facebook about recalled food and treats, or food and treats that have never been recalled but are harming pets.  I thought that I would take a few minutes to sit down and literally put the definition of some of these ingredients on here for everyone to read.

Many of the huge corporations currently put ingredients in their products that are questionable… but many are also not even questionable, but just simply should not be there.  I’ve listed a few of the treats below along with their ingredients.  Many of the ingredients in these treats can also be seen in many of the pet foods that you can buy at any big box retailer.

Now let’s take a look at the ingredients.  Below I will list a definition of exactly what they are.  I’m not listing every ingredient on every panel… just the ones that I feel people need to understand.

BHA-  The World Health Organization has named both BHT and BHA as suspicious cancer-causing compounds. Plus the State of California has now identified BHA as a possible carcinogen, too.2

Considering these troubling issues, you’d think these two dubious preservatives would be shunned by the pet food industry.

Unfortunately, both BHA and BHT can still be found in a number of commercial dog foods.

Red 40 / Yellow 5 / Blue 1 / Yellow 6-  Yellow 5, Yellow 6 and Red 40—contain compounds, including benzidine and 4-aminobiphenyl, that research has linked with cancer. Research has also associated food dyes with problems in children and pets including allergies, hyperactivity, learning impairment, irritability and aggressiveness.

Propylene Glycol-  Propylene glycol is a controversial additive used to help preserve the moisture content in some commercial dog foods. You may already recognize this chemical for its more everyday use — as the key component in newer automotive antifreeze.

Animal Digest-  Animal digest is a common ingredient used in pet foods. As defined by the Association of American Feed Control Officials, digest is produced by the chemical or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean animal tissue that has not undergone decomposition.  ***The huge issue here is that the companies using it find it acceptable to NOT tell you what animal it is.  What is your dog eating???***

By-Product-  Animal by-products are what's left of a slaughtered animal after the parts intended for human consumption have been removed.  You should never feed your pet any product that contains by-products.  “Meat by-product” and “Animal By-Product” are even worse… as you have no clue what it even is.

There are many of the ingredients listed above that I did not define.  All of the information here was simply found on Google… it’s no secret.  However, the large corporations have brainwashed us in to thinking that many of these things are okay, and we should just trust them.  If your food or treats contain any of the ingredients that I actually defined, I would stop using them immediately.

Corn, sugars, and wheats should NEVER be within the first 6 ingredients in a product you have... as they are simply fillers.  Dogs should not even have corn, as it was found to be a top 3 allergen for them.
